The Lazy Katy Woman’s Way to be a Rancher

What? You ask! Look, lady, are you keeping livestock in your backyard? What about the deed restrictions? Where do you live?
Simmer down, I’m not running a suburban ranch; I’m pursuing a country life-style passion by boarding my alpaca herd on an alpaca ranch in Navasota. I’m a Katy resident and Realtor for nearly 20 years. My children Evan and Elizabeth, pictured above, attend Katy schools and I work for Keller Williams Katy.
Then, you wonder, what in the world is an alpaca? They’re wonderful animals in the camel family, (No, not a llama! Llamas scare me, so big and so prone to spit!). The largest alpaca female might weigh 150 lbs. We shear them annually and their fiber is used in very expensive clothing; it’s an allergy-free wool. Alpaca ranching is a non-slaughter industry; I couldn’t ranch cattle, too much of a softie.
How did I get into such a “weird” form of ranching? It was all due to an afternoon drive in Cat Spring, due west of Bellville. I saw something really different, strange, out in a pasture. What are those gorgeous creatures? I had to find out! When I discovered the business plan and that I could sell a breeding female for minimally $10,000, I was in! (Gotta’ hope for those girls; this year I had two!)
Can you tell that I’m in love with these Peruvian creatures? Did I mention I get to sell rural real estate to my alpaca co-op members when they reach the time in their lives to relocate to the rolling hills just northwest of Katy? It’s the best of two worlds!

Nice blog. Nice play on words. Love the gas station images.
Thanks, Virginia, for the kudos. I’m jealous that you get to live with your “babies”. That is my dream!
Love this post. I found your site through your guest post on Only Katy. Love the pictures. My husband has been calling me Mompaca every since I mentioned Alpaca breeding. Will keep reading your blog.
